Fic: That Old Black Magic

Title: That Old Black Magic
Rating: NC17
Word Count: 36k+
Warnings: None
Summary: AU in which Remus, being as he is a werewolf and all, is homeschooled til he is 16.  Hogwarts is something of an experience, not least because there's this boy called Sirius Black.
Notes: I don’t know. I don’t even know. Do not ask. This was supposed to be a fun little story about Remus and Sirius meeting in their sixth year and falling for each other right off the bat and all the shenanigans that would have ensued from that but then there were all the feelings and all the words and God, the boys just wouldn’t shut up. Somehow we’re at almost 40k and I don’t know how that happened.

Thanks [and blame] to the ever amazing insatiablyyours who always holds my hand and always says all the nice things and who is the best beta to ever beta. Iloveyou.

Remus Lupin is of the mind that being 16 is nothing short of intolerable.

Getting a Grip (series) by JoJo (Teen and Up Audiences)

Why this must be read: When I discovered this fandom a few years ago JoJo was one of the first writers whose stories I read, and her writing became, for me, a sort of gold standard for S&H fanfiction. Getting a Grip is a series of three stories (Getting a Grip, Coming Undone, and Not Waving But Drowning) which expands upon the events of the episode Bloodbath.  In this series, Starsky’s nightmare with Simon Marcus’ cult doesn’t end with his rescue at the old zoo; instead, things get much worse, and, in contrast to the perky tag of the episode, Starsky can’t easily shake it all off.  JoJo gives us beautiful and believable character studies of Starsky as a man who is falling to pieces, and of Hutch, who is angst-ridden and frustrated because he is unable to help his friend and partner.  It’s an incredibly intense story of two desperate men, perfectly paced and told with great care.

Getting a Grip (part 1, 14,851 wds)
Coming Undone (part 2, 15,229 wds)
Not Waving But Drowning (part 3, 10,561 wds)

Hello Members, I give you the new owner for Sirius_Black

After thinking it through, seeing and reading how many wonderful things akatnamedeaster wants for the community. I have decided to step down and pass full ownership of the sirius_black community to her.

I know I'm leaving it in good hands, as I couldn't leave it to a more perfect person than her.

I thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your mod for all this time, and for willing to trust me when I brought to you last year fest. I, thank you, and now I leave you in her capable hands.

Thank you all,
Bernice

Got a lot of work done today. Changed the bedspread, did some cleaning, did a ton of laundry, finally filed the claim report for the race I didn't run, and wrote some thank you notes. (My MOPS group gave me a lovely pot of flowers with some gift cards in it. So sweet!) PLUS I got writing done and took the kids to the park for an hour! I am a little amazed at myself.

I really need to get back on BSGlee. I want to finish it, even though I've broken up with Glee. This chapter is a little hard, because it's Sam's chapter, and I started writing this back in S2. Sam doesn't seem like the same character as he was in S2. Granted, I've really beat him up (I have tortured Sam pretty badly in the background), and he's gone through a lot of significant experiences, but in S2 he just struck me as this nice guy of average intelligence, and in S4 he's like the male Brittany. I'm sticking with his S2 characterization because otherwise this story doesn't really work, but it still frustrates me to knowingly write way OOC, even if the writers did it first.

I need to start moving on my ship swap fic, too. June 15 will be here faster than I think. And this one I WILL keep short. (Unlike the "ficlet" that was supposed to be Saul and Hoshi forming a friendship and taking BSG AU. Yeah. That one's 5000 words now. :P )

I'm bored, so a meme from ignipes: I currently have 90 works archived at AO3. Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to 90 (the first thing I posted there), and I'll tell you three things I currently like about it.

World War I: Injured Horses and People
inmh wrote in little_details
Setting: England, July/Early August of 1914, very beginning of World War I.

Terms Searched: Essentially, I searched for "horses" and "broken legs", "horses" "shooting injured horses", "World War I" got some of what I was looking for: I found articles that discussed how injured/suffering horses were dealt with in WWI and general information on why broken legs are bad news for them. I also found on Wikipedia the American Academy of Neurology's grading-scale for concussions, which I'm using as a reference. However, some of the questions I have here are a bit too specific/unusual for Google.

(Warning, somewhat grim discussion of unpleasant horse death/injury below the cut)

Again, mind that warning.Collapse )

Thank you to anyone who can help me with this, as I know those questions are a bit detailed and specific. Just want to make sure the story is as realistic as possible.

This entry is part 35 of 35 in the series 365 Challenge

The current prompts are leaving me dull and uninspired. Seeking creative procrastination: ask me any question about how something works in a storyworld, a why that's been pestering you, or any backstory you just really want to know, and I'll commentfic it.

If that doesn't inspire you, how about a character (original or fandom) and something crazy you would dare them to do.
